Gregory Crewdson

In the suburbs

In Eveningside (2021-2022), Crewdson explores moments of reflection within the constraints of everyday life; in workplaces and in moments just outside those work structures. The characters in the photographs are sparse and often seen through store windows, in mirror reflections or positioned amidst their daily routine at a railroad bridge, doorway, porch, bank, beauty salon, supermarket or on the streets of American suburbs.

The photographer brings the viewpoint closer to the characters and plays with light and dark. With special effects, such as fog, rain, smoke and haze, and an extensive production and lighting team, he realizes a monochromatic palette. The result is a rich gothic atmosphere, reminiscent of film noir and classic films, but with the possibilities and clarity of the most current technology in digital photography.

A household name

Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He trained at SUNY Purchase and Yale School of Art, to which he is currently a professor of photography. Crewdson has been active as a visual artist for more than thirty years, exhibiting worldwide in leading galleries and museums, including MoMA in New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Gallerie d'Italia in Turin and Fotomuseum Den Haag. With his feature film-like methodology, he tells a story in one image. In the process, photography and film are brought together.

Among Crewdson's extensive and widely acclaimed body of work are Natural Wonder (1992-1997), Twilight (1998-2002), Dream House(2002), Beneath the Roses (2003-2008), Cathedral of the Pines (2013-2014), An Eclipse of Moths (2018-2019) and Eveningside (2021-2022), of which a book of the same name was recently launched. The photo series Beneath the Roses, with a crew of over a hundred people, is the subject of the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters.

Reflex Amsterdam also presents a selection of photographs from the Beneath the Roses and Cathedral of the Pines series at its second location Reflex, the Residence, during the exhibition at the gallery.
