The Golden Palm beckons: these are the biggest contenders

The red carpet is rolled out, the champagne is chilled, and in Cannes, the rumor mill is already running at full speed. During the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, everything ultimately revolves around one question: which film will walk away with the coveted Palme d'Or? MASTERS lists five titles that could very well make film history.

1.Hope | After Hong-jin

One of the most discussed titles in the competition is Hope by South Korean director Na Hong-jin. The film marks his return after years of absence and stands out for its mix of science fiction and thriller.

Cannes loves films that dare to surprise. Hope seems to do exactly that: big, bold, and internationally striking. It is especially interesting that jury chairman Park Chan-wook himself comes from South Korea, although that of course does not automatically mean an advantage.

 

2.Fatherland | Paweł Pawlikowski

Paweł Pawlikowski does not need a grand spectacle to make an impression. With films like going en Cold War he already showed how powerful silence, tension, and history can be. His new film Fatherland seems like exactly the kind of title Cannes is susceptible to: stylish, idiosyncratic, and with a story that gets under your skin.

3. Fjord | Cristian Mungiu

Cristian Mungiu knows how to silence Cannes. The Romanian filmmaker previously won the Golden Palm with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and is known for films that slowly build tension. His new film Fjord It seems like another one of those titles where nothing needs to be said on a grand scale to still hit hard.

4. Paper Tiger | James Gray

With Paper tiger American director James Gray is bringing a film to Cannes starring Miles Teller, Scarlett Johansson, and Adam Driver, among others. Cannes does not often choose pure Hollywood productions, but James Gray is a respected auteur within the American film world. The combination of a star-studded cast, a social theme, and emotional depth makes this an interesting favorite.

5. Amarga Navidad | Pedro Almodovar

A film by Pedro Almodóvar never falls in quietly. The Spanish director is known for his distinctive style, vibrant colors, and stories in which emotion is always strongly present. Almodóvar knows better than anyone how to bring together color, drama, and strong characters. As a result, he remains a name Cannes always looks to.

The ultimate winner will be announced during the closing ceremony on May 23.
