Meet the electric version of an iconic Mercedes-Benz model

For many 4Ă—4 enthusiasts, the G-Class has a kind of mythological status. Mercedes-Benz will soon see if the famous model can maintain this status in an age of electrification: the brand unveiled an all-electric prototype of the G-Class this week: the concept EQG.

IAA Mobility show

The electric-powered 4Ă—4 was introduced at the IAA Mobility show currently taking place in Munich. Despite its concept status, the zero-emission car is expected to go into production and become part of the brand's EQ line. Exactly when the EQG will come out is not yet known. But in any case, the German carmaker seems to be cleverly capitalizing on the tightened emissions rules from the European Climate Plan. Indeed, from 2035, no new cars with combustion engines will be allowed on the market unless they are completely emission-free.

Spare tire gives way to charging cables

What's good news for G-Class fans is that the electric- and gasoline-powered versions look almost identical. The Concept EQG still retains the recognizable rectangular shape and iconic round headlights of the original. However, there are also differences, such as the front LED light bar and aluminum rims. Also, the spare tire on the back has given way to an illuminated lockbox with space for charging cables. Before the production version hits the market, hardly anything will change, as the design department informs that the concept model is about 90% finished.

Mercedes is not releasing many more details about EQG. What is clear, however, is that each wheel will have an electric motor to provide all-wheel drive. The EQG also retains the separate ladder chassis with rigid rear axle. So like the other G-Classes, it will remain off-road-friendly.
