From the world's deepest pool to the city with the world's tallest restaurant; Dubai is the city of superlatives. This new project proves that all too well. The new concept Dubai Reefs promises to be not only an architectural masterpiece, but also the largest project to preserve the ocean.
Developer URB's ambitious concept consists of a sustainable floating community for marine research, regeneration and ecotourism that includes housing, hospitality, retail, education - and research facilities. In addition, the project includes an artificial reef, covering an area of 200 square kilometers that could be home to more than a billion corals and 100 million mangrove trees.
According to URB, the health of cities is inextricably linked to the health of the oceans: ''The ocean is the source of life that controls everything. However, our ocean will look completely different by the end of this century if we do not take action today.'' According to the developer, Dubai, as an innovative coastal city, is best positioned to lead such a transformation.
Research
Central to the project, then, is an institute dedicated to ocean research and the protection of Dubai's coastal environment. Educational programs on ocean conservation will also be offered.
But in addition to research and conservation, Dubai Reefs also offers a unique ecotourism destination with several floating eco-lodges, all powered by green energy.
If construction continues, the developer expects to complete the project by 2040.
