What profession would you be in if you were not a plastic surgeon and why?

"If I were not in this profession I would be a film director in Hollywood. When I was sixteen years old I wrote my own sci-fi story, which I turned into a script. My high school Dutch teacher liked this story so much that he suggested I show it at the lustrum. For this lustrum I got the necessary materials to make the production and eventually I made a video film of about three quarters of an hour which was played on the Video 2000. This was Philips' first video system. Mega proud I was!Following this project, I received a request from the municipality of Nijmegen, where I was living at the time, to make a film for the International Film Festival. I made a slapstick and then got a mention in De Gelderlander that I was "the promising film talent". Feeling unstoppable, I told my father that I was no longer going to study Medicine, but was going to become a film director in Hollywood. My father deliberately did not go against this idea, but did advise me to study Medicine first, so that I at least had a "good" foundation. After all, there were so many talented film directors and only a select few broke through. After my studies, I continued in the profession in which I still work today."

What is your No. 1 business tip?

"Keep in touch with your existing customer. The biggest turnover comes from existing customers. Nurture this. Both through personal contact and social media, newsletters and events. I think this as well as a good team is key to a successful business."

Who was your mentor during your career and where do you get your inspiration?

"I always get inspiration from conferences, as we know them in Monaco. Here I spar with colleagues and exchange ideas. In the past my mentors were also my advisors, but of course these advisors are from a different era, so by reading current publications I keep developing myself. I also draw inspiration from the work of my American colleagues. In America, the aesthetic industry has been at the forefront for years. In fact, marketing and PR is much more advanced there. At the Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress (AMWC), I met the renowned American surgeon Paul Nassif. He is known as an incredible PR machine. This fact my team and I also want to implement here in the Netherlands."
