How DMD Amsterdam brings modern and monumental together

Every estate, monastery, mansion or coach house has its own story. Designer and founder of DMD Amsterdam Dick Mulders knows how to bring this story back to these properties like no other. At the same time, the designer brings the twenty-first century into the property, bringing modern and monumental together in a unique way in his designs. Text: Fleur de Jong

International influences

In 2017, designer Dick Mulders founded DMD Amsterdam . The interior designs created by DMD Amsterdam are best described with the words daring and distinctive. Dick has seen a lot of the world, living in London, Shanghai and Sidney. He is now back in Amsterdam. The international influences can be seen in the interiors of DMD Amsterdam. Timeless, authentic materials with special textures are used. In this way, something surprising and unique is created every time. According to Dick, the client's wishes are always central: "We contribute the ideas and together we walk the path to the final result.

Sustainable renewal of estates

The disused Dutch Groot Bijstervelt estate in Oirschot has been restored and repurposed in collaboration with DMD Amsterdam. The convent, chapel, and new coach house have been restored to their former glory and converted into apartment buildings, a hotel, and a brasserie. The chapel on the Estate has even been transformed into a modern conference center. The result: an interplay of modern and monumental elements in a natural setting, and thus a sustainable renewal of the buildings. With the new destination and design, the estate is ready for the future.

In May Landgoed De Wulperhorst in Zeist opened. The estate was formerly occupied by Navo chief commander and renowned pianist Wibi Soerjadi. Meanwhile, 25 residential studios have been realized in the old mansion and the new coach house has 19 luxury hotel rooms. The location lies amid the forests and fields of the Utrecht Landscape.

Every estate, monastery, mansion or carriage house has its own story. Dick knows better than anyone how to bring that story back to properties that have sometimes been left untouched for years. This starts with restoring original elements, such as ceiling ornaments. But DMD Amsterdam also brings the twenty-first century into the building. That means the furnishings are a combination of modern and classic. The somewhat heavier classic fabrics come to life with a modern lighting plan and special wall finishes. After all, the furnishings must fit the property, its surroundings and its users. The Wulperhorst estate and Groot Bijstervelt estate
