Cambio

According to Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin of the designer duo Studio Formafantasma, for far too long the development of design has been based on a single narrative: the idea of prosperity for humans and design as a solution to human needs and desires. The focus has been on manufacturing products, without questioning the entire infrastructure that makes this process possible. They are now questioning that through Cambio, an exhibition about the global dynamics of the wood industry and the problematic relationship between design and ecological exploitation. The exhibition considers the legacy of industrial production as the dated foundation of the contemporary designer. Trimarchi and Farresin express the hope that the exhibition will help shift the prevailing idea of design as the result of the industrial revolution to an approach to design as the possibility of constructive transformation in this time of climate change and social instability.

Shifting Perspectives

Corona has taught us to look at the world in a different way. The experimental art and design duo Rive Roshan, consisting of Dutch designer Ruben de la Rive Box and Iranian-Australian designer Golnar Roshan, enchants with installations and objects that challenge us to look at the world from a new perspective. Natural effects such as the ripple in water, wind-formed patterns in sand and magical reflections of light are approached through experimental and highly refined use of everyday materials. Thus visual and spatial meditations are created that play with our perception of space, light and time. Especially for Museum JAN in Amstelveen, they create three spatial experiences in which glass plays a surprising role. This exhibition, entitled Shifting Perspectives, can be seen from January 29 through May 23.

Fibre Placement Chair

This feather-light Fibre Placement Chair was created during an experiment at the Netherlands Air and Space Center. Designer Marleen Kaptein used a robot to fold strips of heated carbon fiber over each other. In different directions, so that once fused, an ironclad piece of furniture 'grew'. The structure is complex, but the profile clear and simple.
