From office building to high-end living in luxury The Mayor

In Amstelveen, people are working with all their might on new construction project The Mayor. This project will transform the former KPMG building into luxury apartment homes. Entrepreneurship is in the blood here

The Mayor is certainly not M.J. De Nijs en Zonen's first project. The construction company was responsible for the restoration project of the old streetcar depot De Hallen, museum Hermitage and the construction of Eye Filmmuseum. Entrepreneurship really runs in the blood here. This year, the company has been in the hands of the De Nijs family for no less than 100 years, making it a real family business. To this day, members of the De Nijs family still form the main management. Every member of the family is very involved in the projects and that makes for a great place to work, says project developer Eltjo Hamster.

From office building to apartment buildings

The company likes a challenge. They don't do a large new construction project in an empty pasture. Instead, they opt for sustainable construction. They are best known for building and renovating in and around Amsterdam. Often these are projects with limited movement space on and around the construction site, such as at The Mayor.

The former KPMG building is one such construction site. The office building was completed in 1991, but after only 18 years the company decided to move to a new office a few meters away. However, the building was never occupied again and thus has been vacant since 2009. M.J. De Nijs en Zonen dared and is now transforming the office building into a new apartment building with luxury penthouses, apartments and park villas.

"Actually, this project totally fits with De Nijs' vision," explains project developer Eltjo Hamster. After all, De Nijs is known for building inner-city, often complicated projects. "We see such logistical puzzles as a challenge. So it was not so surprising that De Nijs, together with a number of investors, wanted to sink its teeth into this project."
