Concept unveiled for vertiport terminal

For a long time it seemed very futuristic, but the arrival of flying cabs is now very close in Dubai. A British architectural firm recently unveiled the concept for a so-called vertiport terminal for the city that will accommodate flying cab services.

Foster + Partners' concept is part of a proposal for the future infrastructure network for "electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles." This network could get people to various popular locations in Dubai in no time.

The proposal is to locate the terminal next to Dubai Airport and integrate it into the city's existing transportation systems. Located on a raised deck to facilitate aircraft takeoff and landing, the building wraps around the airport. The arrival and departure lounges offer picturesque views of the airport and the city beyond. The overhanging roof protects the terminal from sunlight and prevents overheating.

As for interiors, the architects chose a refined palette of warm, natural materials to create, they say, a comfortable and serene environment.

Seamless connection

David Summerfield of Foster + Partners is excited about the design: ''We are excited to have developed a vertiport concept for the emerging Advanced Air Mobility industry, this will begin to change the way people travel within Dubai. The conceptual vertiport connects to Dubai International Airport and the Dubai Metro to provide a seamless connection and a way of sustainable travel across the city.''

The plan is to develop the network of vertiports by 2026.Â
