CITY GUIDE: ZWOLLE

Zwolle's historic city center is home to many terraces, restaurants and cafes. Strolling through the center, you automatically come to Zwolle's two most striking appearances: the most beautiful bookstore in the Netherlands, Waanders In de Broeren, and Museum de Fundatie. From the museum's striking window, one glance is all you need: the bustling city center lies at your feet.Text: Christian Clerx

The Librije

This ultimate starred classic cannot be missing from a list of tips about Zwolle. Jonnie and Thérèse de Boer have taken gastronomy and hospitality to a higher level with their restaurant. The cuisine has been unparalleled for years, using authentic regional products in conjunction with the latest cooking techniques. And you can also sleep at star level. In Hotel De Librije you can taste the atmosphere of the old women's prison, through the cell doors, bars in front of the windows and the 'cachot'. The 19 rooms each have their own character and decor with a special piece of art in each room.

Pillows Hotel

On the edge of Zwolle's historic center is Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Ter Borch. With its 41 luxurious rooms and suites, the hotel exudes a personal, inviting and refined atmosphere. A fine place to catch your breath from all the special impressions of the city of Zwolle. Understated luxurious simplicity, eye-catching art and warm homeliness are keywords that suit this delightful hotel.

Herman Brood Museum

Situated in a beautiful location in the museum heart of Zwolle is the Herman Brood Experience. This special museum was festively opened by Johan Derksen on November 3, 2018. The museum consists of three rooms and displays a broad collection of art and related works by Herman Brood from the private collection of friend and initiator Ivo de Lange, widow Xandra Brood, daughters Lola and Holly and sisters Elly and Beppie. Paraphernalia and fan collectibles such as letters, drawings and poems are regularly displayed here. A wonderful experience that takes you back to the nineties.

Museum de Fundatie

This unusual museum is housed in a neoclassical building built between 1838 and 1841 and designed by the Hague architect Eduard Louis de Coninck. It was converted into an art museum in 2004-2005 to a design by architect Gunnar Daan. The foundation of Museum de Fundatie's collection was laid by art expert Dirk Hannema. His collection was fused over time with other collections, including historical, modern and contemporary art, crafts, non-Western art and a small collection of ethnographics.
