Champagne bottle for space

Of course, a glass of champagne is never wrong. However, when you have safely reached space as an astronaut, it is certainly an achievement to raise your glass. For this reason, a French company has designed a special champagne bottle that can be uncorked and drunk in space.

Maison Mumm unveiled the final design of the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar this week. Through a collaboration with Axiom Space, a leader in commercial and manned spaceflight, the special bottle will now fly along on future space missions. Initiated in 2017, the ambitious project is now fully compliant with spaceflight specifications and AOC Champagne regulations. These regulations include that champagne must be stored and transported in glass and have a traditional mushroom-shaped cork.

Special blend

Once arrived in space, the champagne cannot be opened and poured in a normal way; a ring on top of the neck holds the cork in place and ensures safe uncorking. Traditional pouring is also out of the question without gravity, but the bottle is designed to mimic this process anyway. The champagne emerges from the neck and then collects in the ring that once held the cork. Once in the ring, the champagne is poured into a special glass.

Because sensory experiences change in the air, a special blend was devised. The Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is made from 2016 grapes, most of which are Pinot Noir.

Cheers to a safe (space) sail!
