Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Superblue and BMW i say they share the vision of creating forward-looking experiences that look toward a sustainable future, where art and technology can create human experiences for retreat, joy and social connection. A key principle for BMW i is to create a new understanding of luxury in an era that will be shaped by innovations in sustainability and digitalization.

Central to this reinterpretation is the BMW i7; the inspiration for the artwork's collaboration. The all-electric sedan clearly shows how an exclusive driving experience and the ultimate feeling of well-being on board can be combined with sustainability and digitalization. For example, the car's interior is illuminated depending on the mood of the driver: relaxed, expressive or sporty.

Light bulbs respond to heartbeat

The installation consists of 6,000 light bulbs suspended at various heights; an intimate landscape that invites visitors to come and traverse. Each light bulb turns on in response to the rhythm of a previous visitor's pulse. Custom-made pulse sensors record a visitor's heartbeat; when a participant interacts with the installation, their pulse is added.

All the heartbeats together form an impressive chorus of light and sound. By translating inner power into an outer form, Lozano-Hemmer makes the invisible of the heartbeat tangible. The visionary application of biometrics in this new context shows the creative potential of collaborations between art and science. Also read: 'BMW changes car color at the touch of a button'
