‘s Werelds best betaalde voetballers

For years, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were on the ball and triumphed at the top of the list of highest paid footballers in the world. A new record and a new number one; Forbes published the list of the highest paid footballers in the 2022-23 season. MASTERS takes a look at the top five.

1. Kylian Mbappé 

When Ronaldo and Messi first exceeded 100 million in total annual earnings, they were both in their thirties. Mbappé, however, is already achieving this amount at just 23 years old. Forbes estimates that in 2022-23, the French footballer will earn 130 million, excluding taxes and transfer fees. This amount is a record in Forbes' annual rankings. Despite rumors of a move to Real Madrid, the footballer signed a three-year contract extension in May to continue playing at Paris-Saint Germain. Like most soccer contracts, the terms of the deal are not public, but experts say Mbappé will pay about 112 million salary, in addition to earnings of 18 million from collaborations with Nike, Dior, Hublot, Oakley and Panini, among others.

2. Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi achieved many of his successes at FC Barcelona, but was forced to trade the club for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. Rumor has it, however, that Messi is considering returning to FC Barcelona According to Forbes, the footballer earns on the pitch 66.4 million and off the field 56.2 million, giving him an income of around 122.6 million. Experts say the off-field amount will increase by 20% if Messi takes Argentina to a World Cup victory in November.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo 

Ronaldo may not be number one, but this soccer player - with an astonishing 486 million followers on Instagram - earns the most off the field thanks to partners such as Nike, Herbalife and Livescore. He reportedly earns €61 million from these. Club Manchester United pays the footballer €41 million.

4. Neymar Jr.

In the top five no less than three players from Paris Saint-Germain. Neymar played his first game for the French club in 2017 after a record €268 .6 million transfer. At 30 years old, the player earns an estimated €56.2 million at his club and another €32.7 million off the field.

5. Mohamed Salah

Salah, from Egypt, signed with Liverpool in 2017. This year, the player was named the Premier League's best footballer. The top player earns 35.7 million at the English club. In addition, the player earns another 18.4 million in addition to his salary, thanks in part to his deal with Adidas.
