Maison Amsterdam: 250 years of eccentric fashion history of the city where anything goes

250 years of liberality and freedom in Amsterdam. You can't let this go unseen, literally. Feast your eyes on 250 years of fashion history in an Amsterdam context. In the Nieuwe Kerk, in the heart of Amsterdam, the fashion exhibition Maison Amsterdam will launch from September 18. And no hurry, because you have until April 22, 2022 to delve into the fashion history of a city where anything goes and above all anything goes.Text: Patrick Stoffer
Image: De Nieuwe KerkThe show translates fashion history through 150 objects from Museum Amsterdam's fashion collection. Historical pieces are shown, as well as from well-known couturiers such as Dick Holthaus, Edgar Vos, Frank Govers, Frans Molenaar and Max Heymans to designers of today with international fame, such as Bas Kosters, Iris van Herpen, Jan Taminiau, Viktor & Rolf and many others. It tells a story of a city where anything goes and the eccentric fashion city that Amsterdam became as a result. The different styles according to Dutch values: don't bow to commerce and just do what you like.

The exhibition is in collaboration with Amsterdam Museum and pieces from other museums. Take 'a trip down memory lane' along the Zeedijk, Oostelijke Handelskade, Dam Square and Vondelpark to witness different fashion styles. You will dive into the past of, for example, the extravagant styles of club RoXY and iT to the nightlife of the roaring twenties. But there are also pieces hanging from over 200 years and there is room for the new generation, such as designers Amber Jae Slooten, Karim Adduchi, Ninamounah and Patta.

The name, Maison Amsterdam, is a nod to the French fashion houses, since Amsterdam is not so "maison" at all. Instead, the Netherlands is praised for its clubs, streetwear and the quirky approach of designers such as Viktor & Rolf, Iris van Herpen, Ronald van der Kemp and Darwin Winklaar. A show that is definitely a must-see for the fashion lover, but also for the non-model lover.
