FOR SALE: VERY FIRST APPLE COMPUTER

A piece of history can be found on eBay: the very first Apple computer is up for sale for nearly 1.3 million euros. This original Apple-1 computer is one of only six working in the entire world. It is very well preserved, is still in original condition and is not yet in a museum.Text: Fleur de Jong

Apple-1 computer

Although, for example, the Macintosh 128K or iMac G3 are better-known models from Apple, the Apple-1 is the model that really started things. It was the first computer to combine a keyboard with a microprocessor and a connection to a monitor. The computer was created by Steve Wozniak, initially for personal use only. A friend of the designer, Steve Jobs, came up with the idea to sell the computer. The Apple-1 computer is still in its original wooden case, which was supposed to protect it.

A total of 63 Apple-1 copies are still known to exist, of which only six are still in working condition 44 years later. This particular copy, was purchased by the seller in 1978 and verified as original by Apple-1 expert Corey Cohen in 2019. Also includes certificate of authenticity.

Expensive price tag

The computer is sold by Canadian Krishna Blake who keeps it in the US state of Florida. Apple-1 copies have previously passed over the counter, including one sold for 745,000 euros in 2014 and 173,000 euros in 2010. Because Blake's copy is rarer, the seller hopes to get over 1.3 million euros for it. This is about 2,300 times the price tag the computer had in 1978.
