4 must-see exhibitions

Many museums showed their collections online, but what could be more fun than spending hours wandering through a museum and seeing the works in real life? For example, see if you can discover all the sculptures on the sculpture route in Amsterdam South or a hidden message in a Banksy artwork. MASTERS shows 4 must see exhibitions that you should not miss.Text: Fleur de Jong

ARTZUID | Amsterdam

Lawas and foodwalks seem to be far behind us already, yet we don't want to keep you from this fun route. For four months you will encounter seventy sculptures on the avenues in Amsterdam-Zuid. Along a route of 5 kilometers are works of both internationally known artists and young talent. The route runs along Apollolaan and Minervalaan with offshoots to Museumplein, among other places. In addition to the sculptures on display, ARTZUID also includes a fringe program with guided tours, artist talks, lectures and an educational program. Participating artists include Joseph Klibansky, Klaas Gubbels, Ronald A. Westerhuis and Carin Scholten.

The sculpture tour is free and will be from July 1 to Oct. 17, 2021. Jean Marie Appriou | The big Watcher

On the last of Jan Jansen, 60 years of shoes and Dutch Design in Museum JAN | Amstelveen

This exhibition features the work of Jan Jansen, or too 'The crazy shoe maker' as Vogue Italia affectionately calls him. For more than 60 years he has been a master of colorful, extravagant and groundbreaking shoe design. Jansen became world famous with his technical constructions that play with gravity, such as the floating heel. Exuberant use of color is also characteristic of his shoes. He also designed the Bamboo Shoe, a shoe with a high wedge heel made of bamboo, in 1973. The shoe designer's work is seen as a source of inspiration for generations to come. With the exhibition, Museum JAN thus also provides a platform for young talent and shows the cross-generational influence of Jan Jansen's work.

The exhibition will be on display at Museum JAN from Saturday, June 5 through August 28.Museum JAN

Banksy Laugh Now | Amsterdam

There is little certainty about the true identity of British artist Banksy. Those curious about the work of this mysterious artist can view an exhibition of 50 original works by Banksy at the Moco Museum. The British artist's work is mainly characterized by catchy and humorous images, combined with slogans. In his street art, Banksy combines graffiti with a distinctive stencil technique. Normally Banksy's work can be found in various European cities, but also outside Europe such as in the U.S. The collection at the Moco Museum includes the iconic works Laugh Now, Girl with Balloon and Kate Moss that come from private collections.

For true fans of the Song Contest, this is an ultimate opportunity. Kunstmuseum Den Haag is showing no less than nine Song Contest outfits worn by the female presenters and Dutch artists in addition to a new exhibition program. Among others, the exhibition shows the dark blue design by David Laport worn by Nikkie de Jager during the first semifinal and the two-piece ensemble consisting of sequins worn by presenter Edsilia Rombley. Those who want to see the beautiful works by the Dutch designers should be quick, as they will be on display until July 11.
